Reflections: I am Brave and Beautiful

“The beauty of a woman is not in a facial mole, but true beauty in a Woman is reflected in her soul. It is the caring that she lovingly gives, the passion that she knows.” Audrey Hepburn

IamBraveAndBeautiful With and Without Make Up

When I first came across the #IamBraveAndBeautiful campaign on keepmovingforwardwithme's blog, my initial reaction was reservation.  I thought to myself and then shared with her: What a beautiful campaign. I wish we would all start at home teaching our daughters that they are beautiful as God created them. I am brave and beautiful with and without makeup. I look forward to the day when this would be a given, not something to campaign for. That said, I'm going to join the effort because every bit counts.  As I pondered what all it meant, I knew in my heart that every effort we make to bring women together to love and respect ourselves is a step in the right direction. I know Megan and Cobi had great intentions when this idea was planted in their hearts and so, whether we agree with it or not, it is inspiring.

I am brave and beautiful with and without make up - No make up

I grew up in a household where make up was not encouraged. My Mom and Step Mom used very little of it; yes they were blessed with good skin. I experimented with it in my teen years; wore a lot of it in my twenties, cut back in my thirties, and wear it as needed now. Sometimes, all I wear is lipstick and sometimes I forget to put it on when I'm rushing out of the house. My daughters don't wear any make up because they think it does nothing for them (wise children). I like it occasionally and admire women who can apply it flawlessly... You know, the no make up, make-up look? Ha!
I am Brave and Beautiful - a beauty movement that is sweeping the globe. Colbie Caillat started it with her recent song and video called:

I am brave and beautiful with or without make up -  lipstick only and joy

I'm a Mom, a daughter, a sister, a friend to many and, while I love wearing makeup to go out for professional and fun events, my make up doesn't define me. It is a complement to who I am, not the reverse. Sadly, there are many among us who don't feel beautiful until they have their FACE (made up) on. There's nothing wrong with make up, but I pray that my fellow Sisters around the world will do the inner work so the outer beauty is enhanced by it... I've added a make up look, a make up free look, (slightly messy hair) and a lipstick only and joy look. When we are upbeat, our cells come alive and give us a glow. I know it is not always easy to be cheerful, but if we remind ourselves to find the good in situations and to be grateful for the blessings in our lives, we will age gracefully and that inner glow will radiate. It is no secret. What do you think?

  1. I actually never wear makeup. I never really thought I needed it, so I always look the same.

  2. I wear makeup, but much less than I did as a teen. I think it's important to love ourselves just the way we are.

  4. Great post. As women, we need to remember that we are more than our faces and our clothes.

  5. I'm loving the whole concept of this. Women tend to be ruled by what other people think, and this is a great step in the direction of squashing that.

  6. What a great post! And being confident is so important for all of us to teach our children.

  7. That's how I feel about it. It's just an enhancement but not necessary. I think we're all beautiful just as we are and make-up free.

  8. Be Brave, Bold, and Beautiful!! I love this! I love your attitude about yourself and think you are such an encouragement to women.

  9. You look beautiful in both photos! You can't hide your glow!
I like wearing makeup too, but I agree that I don't want it to define me. I want "a nice person who is kind to others" to define me. Awesome post!

  10. I think you look beautiful with no makeup on too! The older I get I ironically feel the need to wear less.

  11. I have always been one to believe that it's the inside that counts, beauty is on the inside not the outside.

  12. i wear make up sometimes. but i love love love this campaign so much!

  13. You look amazing without makeup. I don't ever wear makeup, not out of choice, but just because I don't have the time to put it on.

  14. Thank you so much for joining us! I think you captured the spirit of the campaign perfectly. Admittedly, I really don't wear a lot of make up either!

  15. I like the idea of this campaign, but I always feel like most of the women who post the "no-makeup" photos have much better skin than I do. If I didn't have blotchy, red, acne-riddled skin with hyperpigmentation, I wouldn't wear foundation either. :/ You look lovely in your photos!

  16. My wife does not wear very much makeup either. I love the natural beauty she displays.

  17. This is a great campaign, putting forth a good message. I wear very minimal makeup myself, but I do enjoy it at times.

  18. I can tell the times I need more makeup is when I am not taking care of myself and really need to drink more water and get more sleep. I usually wear minimal makeup.

  19. Such an inspiration post! I honestly hardly ever wear make up. Never have. The funny thing it's because it takes up to much time.

  20. Love the quotes you had throughout the post. You are beautiful.....and beauty really has nothing to do with your outward appearance. Love teaching that to my daughter.

  21. I'm envious of those women who have beautiful, natural skin. Mine isn't the greatest, but it's not too bad. I try to go for the no-makeup look or at least a more natural look with my makeup. I don't wear anything bold when I go out. I love that Eleanor Roosevelt quote.

  22. Your beauty shines out from the inside. You are right in not letting your make up or how you look define you. Great article and thank you for sharing it with us.

  23. I use to be one of those women who would not leave the house "with out my face on." Then, one day I finally realized if someone does not like me because I do not have make-up on........well, I do not need them in my life do I? Great campaign!

  24. I love this! Just recently I've realized the same as you have, that I am beautiful with and without makeup on. You are beautiful!

  25. What an amazing quote from Audrey Hepburn! And I agree with you, you are beautiful without make-up. Actually you are a very beautiful woman and person :)

  26. I think society as a whole places too much emphasis on outer-beauty rather than appreciating the beauty inside.

  27. My 20 year old son teased me one day when I put makeup on before we went hiking in the woods. He pointed out that 1. I was going to be in the woods, 2. I was going to glisten (sweat) and 3. that our family knows what I really look like. Then he added that I'm pretty without makeup too. Not sure why my 20 year old thought he should share this, but he did. And now, I wear makeup some days… and not other days. I'm sure this is a better example for my 10 year old daughter than the one I was setting. Excellent campaign! Stay beautiful!!!

  28. I think you have a great perspective about beauty and self. I've never been a huge makeup user, but do occasionally when I want to be really fancy!

  29. Yes I don't dwell on the physical, inner is most important to me, attitudes are a reflection of your inner, and I love Audrey Hepburn quote. It's awsome your confident that's always good great share :)

  30. This is really great, I always feel like I look prettier with Make up but I rarely wear it.

  31. Great Post, you are beautiful with or without makeup.

  32. What a fantastic movement! My soon to be 4 year old is just starting to be aware of make up (even though I wear none) an I think it's a fine line between being dependent on it and just using it to enhance your true beauty.

  33. I have been following this movement on social media the past few days. I like it. I like it for women to be brave and recognize the beauty they have within and without.

  34. You are definitely beautiful the way you are. This campaign is very positive and needs to be taught to our kids at a young age.

  35. Interesting post, i had never heard of this campaign but its very encouraging and amazing for young women to read. Great stuff!

  36. The quotes are so true. Real beauty is inside and as long as we believe in it, we are all beautiful!

  37. Such a great campaign! That's exactly what I am telling girls/women with my photography. I want them to feel beautiful and strong- without makeup and plastic surgeries.

  38. This is a great post indeed. I usually go nature except on special occasions and even then I just usually wear a little eye liner. Thanks for sharing.

  39. Make up is a tool and girls need to be taught that they don't have to wear lots of make up to be beautiful.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I had another surgery last week so I don't wear a ton of makeup since i'm at home. i do where it if i'm going to go more than just to the grocery store.

  41. I do find women beautiful without make up, it's actually secondary. My wife would love you!

    ReplyDelete
  42. You are so gorgeous! I do love makeup, however I feel comfortable without it as well. =) Gotta embrace the skin we are in!

    ReplyDelete
  43. I only wear mascara and lip gloss when I leave the house, I'm not trying to look good for anyone else it's what makes me feel good.

    ReplyDelete
  44. What an inspirational and moving post. I love the quotes you included...they really spoke to me. I'm generally pretty insecure and have low self esteem. I feel exposed without makeup and scared to face the world. This article helped me realize I am not the only one who feels this way...and that beauty means much more than that. I am much more than my outward appearance...inner beauty is everything.

  45. thanks for the information. I think all ladies need to feel good about themselves

  48. Great quotes! I think this sounds like a great campaign. I agree that it needs to start at home. We need to teach our daughter what true beauty is. It's what on the inside and how the person acts. Thanks for the great post!

  49. Great post. You look great without makeup. I rarely wear makeup as I have such allergies to most foundations.

I love this post!! I dont feel that a person needs to wear makeup to make them pretty. They are beautiful for who they are on the inside

Love that quote. I wear eyeshadow and blusher when I perform with my chorus - all other times nothing.

  54. This is so true. Beauty comes from within. God created us all different and we need to use what He has blessed us with. I have met many people who were not beautiful to look at but when you knew them all you saw was beauty when you looked at them. Thank you so much for sharing. "Beauty is what beauty does"

  55. How beautiful. And so true and right to the point. Beauty is within. I had to learn this a long time ago-- I too wear very little, and encourage others to be who they are and LOVE who they are. Thank you for the great reminder.
