endless effort to satisfy the need without ever reaching satisfaction." Erich Fromm

Haiku: The Perils Of Greed... The dog and the bone |
Farmer killed the goose
Bird that laid the golden eggs
Such perils of greed...
Greedy dog drops bone
To shadow box the unknown
Loss is his reward...
I referred back to stories of greed from Aesop's Tales. These are stories I read as a child and they terrified me. The underlying message I got was always that evil befalls greedy people.
Today, the word is Greed
What is Carpe Diem? Blog Owner, Kristjaan Panneman, describes it as: "a weblog on haiku. It's a new daily haiku meme where you can write a classical or non-classical haiku on a given prompt. Haiku is an ancient Japanese poetry form. A haiku has three short lines and describes a short moment (as short as the sound of a pebble thrown into water). Mostly a haiku counts 5-7-5 syllables and is sometimes called 'counted verse.'"

With a bird in hand
He wants the two in the bush
ill with discontent...
Some Food for Thought: Do you know any greedy people? Have you ever been called Greedy? Take a moment to contemplate what Greedy means to you? Love and Peace in 2013.
I would love to hear from you: Please leave me a comment. Thank You!

These are wonderful, really give us something to think about. I enjoy the idea of using Aesop's Fables as inspiration. :-)
ReplyDeleteGreed is indeed exhausting! Stay away from it!
ReplyDeleteYour Haiku are like gems sourced from another treasure trove, the fables... Loved each one Eliz!!
ReplyDeleteI loved the stories on greed you portrayed in your haiku !!!
ReplyDeleteGreed poisons a person. But with the grace of our good Lord, this sinful feeling can be replaced with love, kindness and understanding.
ReplyDeleteTo be content is to be happy. Still, I find no fault in yearning to be better and/or achieve more in life. Else, we will not reach our fullest potentials.
ReplyDeletei abhor greedy individuals
ReplyDeleteI've always enjoyed Aesop's fables. There's always something to be learned from those stories.

Sometimes being greedy will be the one to put you in danger.
ReplyDeleteI know some people that are not contented with what they want.
I really love how your works remind us of important values, Eliz. In this case, a sin that we should avoid. I've never been called greedy, but I'm very careful not to fall into this pit.
ReplyDeleteGreed can be positive too e.g. greedy for knowledge. Nice set of haiku with a deeper meaning.
ReplyDeleteI have read somewhere that the original Aesop fables are much much darker (not sure if it is true). Greed does consume people. I have known people who would betray friends because of greed.
ReplyDeletethe Aesop's tales you've mentioned stuck with me too... specially the dog and the bone... indeed, greed can destroy a lot of things....
ReplyDeletegreed is evil! let's away from it.
ReplyDeleteyes, I know greedy people. They are so insecure and never contented with what they have. They are selfish and can never be happy with what other people have.
ReplyDeleteMommy Maye
The greed bit made me think about my gadget addiction. I buy one and then when a better model comes out, I want to toss what I have aside for the other. Hmm... The first quote is really true.
ReplyDeleteIn reality, we can see who's greedy in power this coming election.
ReplyDeleteunfortunately there are lot of greedy people nowadays.. often times they would betray or destroy someone because of being greedy..
ReplyDeleteGreed destroys relationships. Being greedy brings out undesirable traits.
ReplyDeleteNice one! Greed is bad and bad is bad for the health :)
ReplyDeleteA Chance To Win 10k from SULIT!
Greed becomes the root of most evil doings. Theft, jealousy, graft, corruption to name a few.
ReplyDeleteyou're so good at doing haikus. Greed one of the 7 deadly sins...let's not entertain this emotion as much as possible.
