Musings: Lost And Found...

"Not all those who wander are lost." J. R. R. Tolkien

Musings: Lost and Found Tabby came home.

Have you ever lost something dear to you and later found it? How did it make you feel? When you couldn't find it, what did you do?  Recently, our Tabby cat, Tangy, disappeared for almost 24 hours. He had quietly snuck out the front door when the cable guy was leaving and I only realized he was gone when he didn't show up like clock work to eat his supper.  In a panic, I looked everywhere for him; upstairs and downstairs and beyond. He was nowhere to be found. I sat down and cried... I was worried that, being a house cat, he'd be mauled by the wildlife around me. I had to stop, catch my breath and say a prayer. I was very worried.
A few hours later, a friend stopped by and we searched the house together. No cat... We sat and talked about where he might have wandered off to. We had to come up with a strategy to find him especially as it was getting dark outside.

Since this was Tangy's first great escape, we figured he would be nearby and our best strategy would be to call out to him as we walked up and down our cul de sac. Before heading out, I noticed a group of deer near the staircase that led to the street. One was slamming its right hoof on the earth. It would make sense later. Outside, we made our way up the cul de sac, calling his name. "Tangy! Tangy! Tangy!" We turned back and headed to the main road at the bottom of our street.  By now, I was upset and started calling his name loudly. Suddenly I heard a meow. I stopped and called out again. And another meow responded. I followed his meows in a call and response fashion until I found him - caught under one of our heaviest shrubs. Tangy was stuck! I released him gently, picked him up and ran indoors; we cleaned him up and fed him. He was happy to be home. I was happier to have lost and found him.... For that, I am grateful! Have you lost a favorite pet or a precious item? Did you find it?  Do share your story in the comments below.

I've always loved the adage that says: we don't realize the value of what we have until we've lost it. In my lifetime, I've loved, bought, believed and lost. Each time it was painful but I learned profound lessons from my experiences. I've come to understand  that everything, even the most innocuous things, happens for a divine reason... all events are part of our life map and lessons

The lessons learned have not been all the same but they've been powerful and lasting: They've taught me about trust, belief, hope, and love. Trust yourself; Believe all humans are fundamentally good; Hope for the best in all situations; Love the beautiful souls around us including our devoted pets sent to earth with them; Believe that what is yours will always be and that what God has gifted you, no man can put asunder...  Losing Tangy and finding him reaffirmed these nuggets of wisdom.  Have you ever lost something dear to you? What have you lost and found? Were you thankful for the discovery? What lesson/lessons  did you learn from your experience?

Some Food for Thought:  We  love our family, friends and our beloved pets, yet we sometimes take them for granted. Cherish all you have.  A grateful heart is always satisfied. Love and Peace!

I would love to hear from you: Please leave me a comment. Thank You!

  1. LOL, I lose stuff all the time. I think the worst thing I have ever lost was money. I lost $20 once and it still bothers me to this day.

  2. The only thing I can think of at the moment that I've lost is all of the necklaces my husband has given me! For some reason, I just can't keep a necklace! I feel horrible when I lose them! :(

  5. I love that Gibran quote! I'm not sure if I've ever lost a physical object, but I have lost friends, and I certainly miss periods of my life when I feel I was happier.
    Good food for thought!

  7. I love the Tolkien quote. I have found money that I forgot about and it always made me happy. I think it was only $5 but at that time it was a lot of money since I was very poor and worked a retail job.

  8. We used to have cats that would disappear for days at a time. One was missing for a month before she came home. That is a beautiful pic of your cat, by the way.

  9. No joke, I about had a heart attack when my child did not follow up while at Disney. Granted we lost him for about 3 minutes but it was the scariest three minutes in my life! All we saw when we turned around were a sea of people!

  13. We once lost our cat for about 24 hours too. It was when we lived in an apartment and she had slipped out of our doorway into the hall. The super thought she was a stray and shooed her outside!! We spent hours and hours walking through the blocks around our house. I was SO SO SO relieved when I finally found her!

  16. We have some spirits on our home that like to mislocate things for us. I can't tell you how many times I have been using something, set it down, and when I turn around to use it again, it's gone! They always show back up in the weirdest places too, like the dish sponge I found in the freezer last week.

  20. Nice blog post, inspiring me on this Saturday morning. My house caught on fire a year ago, but as you say, all things happen for a reason. As we rebuild I can now see that. Thanks for the enlightenment this morning! I have copied down your quote to remember.

  21. I've lost quite a few things and right now I've been hunting for my wedding band. Took it off for surgery and have no idea where it is. If I can't find it I guess hubby will have to rethink getting me another for my anniversary which is coming up soon. :)

  25. That has happened a few times to our cats over the years. It's always nice when they come back. Once, our cat never came back. I'm glad yours had a happy ending.

  26. I lost my aunt's class ring once, actually it was stolen from me. I was heart broken. However, it was returned after my mom and I prayed about it.

  27. The Kahlil Gibran quote is so true! We more times than not forget to pray for what we do have until we need to pray for something we need. I'm so glad that your cat came back. I lost my iPod that was a very special Christmas present from my dad. I found it but then my ex husband stole it again and pawned it when he left. It's just an iPod but it was the sentimental value it carried with it.

  28. Such a sweet cat photo! Our cat escaped once, and I was so upset that she was gone for good. (She ended up back in the house without me realizing it at first.)

  29. I'm so glad that you found him! I've lost my necklace that my parents gave to me on my wedding day. It cost them several thousand dollars (that they didn't really have to spend at the time :( and I was going to give it to my daughter on her wedding day.

  30. A pet is a member of the family, so even a short time having them missing is heartbreaking (just like it would be if it were your child)! I'm so glad he made it home! He is gorgeous, by the way!

  32. I've had 3 cats pull an escape act in my lifetime. The first returned covered with oil, so I can only assume she got into a car engine or was mistreated by someone. The second had been gone for 3 or 4 days when I heard him meowing outside my house. Turns out my neighbors set traps for feral cats, and he'd gotten into one. Luckily they set him free and he found his way home. A few years later he sneaked onto a moving truck, and we were stunned to find him when we raised the door. The last cat I lost climbed out a window that a burglar left open in my bedroom. It was over a week before I was trimming bushes in the backyard and heard a tiny mew. That poor boy had gotten into something that took most of the hair off his ears, and he was sick for the month or so I had him after that. One morning he died in my arms, and my only consolation is knowing he got to spend his last days in comfort at home instead of lost and lonely.

  33. So happy your lost little guy returned! I can't remember the last time I lost something significant, though I'm sure there have been instances I'm just not remembering!

  34. My husband gave me a necklace for Valentine's Day before we were married, and I lost it somewhere between our honeymoon and back home. It never turned up and I still get sad when I think about it!

  35. awwwwww im sorry to hear that

  36. Um...I have lost friends but sadly or maybe not sadly I do not miss them. They were not giving back what I gave them. So I don't miss them at all.

  37. It's so good that you were able to find him before any harm came to him. One time our bird got out of the house and my husband sat outside for hours to keep her near the house until I came home and could help him get her in.

  38. We 'lost' my 2 yr old son at my daughter's cheer practice for about 20 minutes one night. We were walking out of the gym and a big group of the boy's basketball team were rushing into the bathroom and he followed them - he was literally right behind me - I have never felt so scared in my life. Nor had I ever prayed so much! The relief I felt when we found him cannot even be expressed!

  42. So glad you found him. On the what have I lost front? I am obsessive about not losing things. It drives my husband nuts because every time I tell him I have lost something he says, "No you didn't. You never lose anything." And he's always right. I do always find them.

  44. Glad it had a good outcome. Cats are escape artists. Ours slipped out last summer and we did not know it til the next day. She hides out and sleeps all day so nothing seemed too out of the ordinary. Luckily, she was on door stoop next morning meowing
