"I love spring anywhere, but if I could choose I would always greet it in a garden." Ruth Stout
Spring is one of my favorite seasons of the year. After months of freezing cold, mounds of snow, gray weather and hibernation, one can feel the earth stir as the warm air and sunny days prod us all; slowly, birds and blossoms find their way back to my side of the earth.
Last winter was particularly brutal, as we had many snowstorms, and blankets of white covered everything for miles and days. To dig ourselves up and out of the lull of winter has not been easy, however, the early blooms of spring and the chirping songs of friendly birds have helped.
"Every spring is the only spring - a perpetual astonishment." Ellis Peterson
Spring by Lord Alfred Tennyson
Now fades the last long streak of snow,
Now burgeons every maze of quick
About the flowering squares, and thick
By ashen roots the violets blow.
Now rings the woodland loud and long,
The distance takes a lovelier hue,
And drowned in yonder living blue
The lark becomes a sightless song... Contd below
When I read Mamakat’s Photo Story Prompt: Take a walk through your neighborhood this week and share some pictures of what Spring looks like where you live, I sighed deeply. Spring's blossoms have been generously abundant this year so I am happy to share. Above and below, I have added photographs of the flora and fauna, the blooms and lifeforms in my garden and my neighborhood. I have also shared a beautiful poem Spring by Lord Alfred Tennyson for your enjoyment. Come, walk with me... May your Spring be as colorful. More colorful blooms below...
"Spring unlocks the flowers to paint the laughing soil." Bishop Reginald Heber
Now dance the lights on lawn and lea,
The flocks are whiter down the vale,
And milkier every milky sail,
On winding stream or distant sea;
Where now the seamew pipes, or dives
In yonder greening gleam, and fly
The happy birds, that change their sky
To build and brood, that live their lives - Lord Tennyson
The first warm day of Spring was followed by a thunderstorm and as it poured, heavy rains everywhere, I stood by my kitchen window, grateful for the changing season. The rains wash the earth, soaking and preparing the seedlings hidden beneath the ground to spread the wings and send their shoots heavenwards.
The gray squirrels have started leaving their sacred place of winter rest, seeking food; a hidden acorn here, a stolen nut there ... and stretching weary bones in excitement... just like the rest of us.
All through the long winter, I dream of my garden. On the first day of spring, I dig my fingers deep into the soft earth. I can feel its energy, and my spirits soar. Helen Hayes
From land to land; and in my breast
Spring wakens too: and my regret
Become an April violet,
And buds and blossoms like the rest. Lord Tennyson
I can't help but wax poetic but if you've ever spent a long, dark, cold winter, longing fr spring, and it arrives at your doorstep with abundant blooms, and sunny days... you'll understand because you'll be smiling too. I hope you enjoyed my offerings. What fine things have you discovered this Spring? Do share

ReplyDeleteHi--Found you on the blog hop. Lovely photos!!
ReplyDeleteHi, Eliz! Here from Mama Kat's. These are gorgeous photos! The flowers are lovely, but my favorites are the images of the squirrel and the ducks. I envy you your seasons. We don't have spring here, and I know we're missing a lot because of that fact.
ReplyDeleteLovely photos, Eliz! I have really been enjoying the warmth and new life of spring, but we're due for a winter style storm here tomorrow!
ReplyDeleteHi Eliz,
ReplyDeleteYour article with those lovely pictures and poems opened my senses.
I appreciate spring like you very much since I come from a country with long and cold winters.
Nowadays, soon as I see spring flowers and color I put my nose there then just freeze for couple of minutes and feel the aroma coming from the trees, and the flowers.
Enjoy and cherish your garden,
Spring is magnificent!
