Do you know about Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF)? ALSF blossomed from the front yard lemonade stand of a young, visionary cancer patient - Alexandra “Alex” Scott (1996-2004). In 2000, 4-year-old Alex informed her parents that she wanted to host a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Her parents, Jay and Liz Scott, supported their daughter's brave act and helped her organize her first stand. Since that special day, the Foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fundraising movement with thousands of supporters across the country carrying on her legacy of hope. To date, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, a registered 501(c)3 charity, has raised more than $80 million toward fulfilling Alex’s dream of finding a cure, by funding over 450 pediatric cancer research projects nationally. This year, 2014, you can join people across the country for Alex’s Million Mile – Run.Walk.Ride. and help raise awareness about childhood cancer in children under the age of fifteen.
“Alex’s Million Mile is as an easy way for runners, walkers and cyclists of all abilities to contribute to the fight against childhood cancer, build community support and get fit,” Jay Scott.
FACT: Do you know that a childhood cancer diagnosis impacts the entire family? The statistics on this family altering disease is sobering. With 1 in 330 kids diagnosed with childhood cancer and with less than 5% in federal funding/aid, it is clear that we all need to chip in and help. Would you please join Alex’s Million Mile – Run.Walk.Ride. initiative this September to raise the profile of National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month? The Foundation is the brain child of Alex's dad, Co-Executive Director, Jay Scott, who also happens to be a running enthusiast.
Alex’s Million Mile invites individuals and teams to pledge to run/walk/ride and contribute to the one million mile goal during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. "Drawing from the inspiration of Foundation creator Alexandra “Alex” Scott, who set out to raise $1 million through lemonade stands in 2004, Jay Scott feels that through combined efforts, reaching one million miles in just thirty days is attainable." The initiative is a great opportunity for people across the country to get out in an easy and healthy way to make a difference in the fight against childhood cancer. If each one of us makes the effort to help out in some way, we will be well on our way to finding a cure. Will you join in?
"September has become highly recognizable within the childhood cancer community as an important time of year ... We hope that through the collective efforts of Alex’s Million Mile participants, we can close the distance between better treatments and ultimately cures.” Liz Scott
How can you help? If you'd like to get involved, there are many ways to do so: You can always make a donation as the money goes to keep research funded and people informed. To help log those one million miles, you can join participants from coast to coast: "Parents can walk their children to school each day, logging one mile each way; families can walk to Friday night dinners and back; instead of taking public transportation, individuals can run or bike to work or evening outings." To keep you motivated and help you meet your goal, you can create your own Run.Walk.Ride team or join an existing team like the “Bloggers Go Gold” team.
You can find/think of creative ways to get those miles up, as each documented step is counted towards the ultimate goal of logging one million miles, AND raising vital awareness of the number one killer of children under the age of 15 in the United States. You can also Tweet about it (here are sample tweets) using hashtag #Journey2aMillion Please don't forget to watch the YouTube video (about a minute) which explains this month-long virtual event.
