Reflections: A Collage And Seven Questions...

"The greatest healing therapy is friendship and love." Hubert H. Humphrey

"Did I offer peace today? Did I bring a smile to someone's face? Did I say words of healing? Did I let go of my anger and resentment? Did I forgive? Did I love?' These are the real questions. I must trust that the little bit of love that I sow now will bear many fruits, here in this world and the life to come." Henri Nouwen

Did I offer peace today?
Did I bring a smile to someone's face?
Did I say words of healing?

This week, I've spent time curating  photos for a photo group. Each day we have to submit a photo that fits a word. Sometimes, its easy and at other times frustrating. Through it all, I've found ways to make peace with the limitations of my collection. Since the week ends on Sunday, I've put together photos from my first week. They represent: In my cup, Stripes, Button, DIY, Upside down, I Need, and Father. Adding a photo of my dad is a first. He passed away suddenly some years ago. It has taken me as long to make peace with his absence, smile at his photos and heal. Today, I responded to the questions above with special attention on my relationship with my father. The collage will make someone smile and hopefully, the peace and healing that I feel from creating a piece and including my dad will help someone find that comfort over a loss. I'm pleased...

Did I let go of my anger and resentment?
Did I listen?
Did I forgive?
Did I love?

From the BlogHer website, the question for the weekend is this: As part of the healing process, please talk about how you processed the events of Ferguson
Honestly, my initial reaction was sadness and shock.  It brought back memories of similar events that have taken place over the years; events that have created more racial divisiveness in the US. Was I angry? Yes, it built up when I heard insensitive comments and thoughtless reactions from some quarters. But as I heard Michael's mother speak, I embraced her and released the stuff. She wants his side to be told and resolved. I imagine Officer Wilson is suffering with his family too. We can't hear or let go if we don't hear all sides and truly listen with compassion. I let go and I listened. healing will come with time...

Did I forgive? Did I love? Yes.  I still say, lets find a way to make this a moment of healing; Michael Brown's life should not be in vain. What remains clear is that: Michael was shot at least six times and wasted away as he lay bleeding on the street for 4 hours. Regardless of what transpired between him and  Officer Darren Wilson, shooting an unarmed person 6 times is excessive and unconscionable. However, I have no choice but to send love and forgiveness to both families. Both sides must be suffering too. Only Michael and Darren know what truly happened that day and until all the facts are in, I say let's remember this was somebody's son, brother, and loved one. Would you want your child to experience such treatment? Would you be so cavalier in dismissing his death if he were one of your own? Would you want a family member being held liable for the death of another? There is pain on both sides. Forgive and send love.  What are your thoughts?

  1. The situation with Michael Brown is sad, but I don't want to make any judgements until all of the evidence is out. That aside, I do try to look for the positive in every day, or at least try to find five things to be grateful for every day. It makes a difference.

  7. I'm not good at difficult situations. I tend to be the one that freaks out LOL.

  8. I usually handle difficult situations in the wrong way because I speak before I think. I need to slow down, breathe and then act.

  18. These are amazing questions to ask ones' self at the end of the day. We have a hymn we sing at church "have I done any good today?" that reminds me of your post. And like you said, there are two sides to every tragedy. Great post!

  20. Sometimes I think forgiveness is the greatest gift you can give someone who has done something wrong towards you. But, forgetting is an even greater gift.
